The textures on Yoru were produced from recordings of old LPs of classical and choral music, subsequently processed, stretched, reversed and manipulated “in real-time.”

http://www.praradio.org/

There are actually lots of really good DJs involved with PRA, and you can listen all day for FREE! I will be posting mp3 links of my sets on my DJ Tanuki blog!

Lastly, I have been keeping a log of everything I’ve listened to in 2010 on Twitter… its fun! I only list full-length releases that I listen to from start to finish, not just individual tracks/shuffle mode. If I listened to the whole thing, you can assume it is “worth listening to!”

http://twitter.com/ethernet333

Some live Ethernet shows coming up in Portland in the next month or two! TBA!

What an amazing, intense, crazy year! I got a record deal, got into graduate school, visited Amsterdam and Rome, ended a major long-term relationship, bought some gear, went completely broke several times, sold some gear, got really excited about DJing with Ableton Live, played some live Ethernet shows, put out my first full-length CD, got over 30 reviews, all positive, including some proper print magazines like The Wire, and moved from Northern California to Portland, Oregon, two weeks ago as of tomorrow! And probably a number of other things, as well!

In 2010 I will be playing lots of Ethernet shows, as soon and as many as possible, basically, at least around the Portland/Eugene/Vancouver area. I have several hours of new material that I’m really happy with, but that I have been feeling like is not suited for Kranky, more like it has been improving my “chops” and production skills. I’m not entirely sure what I’ll do with this past year’s worth of new tracks… I would love to put out a proper techno 12″, as I’ve made some dub techno and IDM-tinged tracks that I’m finally pleased with (and just because I love vinyl!). For Kranky, I will be working on something very deep and special, and I’m looking forward to exploring the brand new Native Instruments Absynth 5 synthesis engine, as Absynth 4 was the main compositional tool behind “144 Pulsations”.

So, my best wishes to all in 2010, I have a feeling its going to be a good one!

If you haven’t yet, please check out my semi-frequently-updated DJ Tanuki Music Review blog, where I’ve been posting short reviews of my all-time favorite albums, and also take a look at my Myspace page, where I’ve been posting all of the reviews of my Ethernet CD, as well as a brand new interview for The Offline People!

Happy Fall Equinox to all!

I am pleased to present a deep and hazy mix of some of my favorite dub-techno classics. Thanks to the cool Self-Titled online magazine for sharing my mix! The mix was put together in Ableton Live 7, with most of the tracks ripped from vinyl, and a couple of the newer tracks bought online in WAV format from Beatport, and features live dub FX and delay manipulations by yours truly. Oh yeah, the Bluetrain track is B2 from “Factory Dubs” ‘00!

Download the mix here!

My CD “144 Pulsations Of Light”, which is more in the drone-ambient territory rather than dub-techno, is out on Kranky on Oct. 5th! Here is the All-Music Review, featuring short clips of each track!

I decided to redesign my websites with a minimal, clean look for the summer. I have been busy getting into grad school and writing reviews for my music blog almost every day. I am happy to announce an official release date of October 5th for my CD, on the fantastic Kranky label, and I’ll share more details as the date gets closer!

I’ve been working on music fairly constantly, alternating mainly between long textural drone ambient pieces and more melodic loop-oriented, slightly IDM-tinged shorter pieces. I’ve also developed several laptop “performance environments” that I can play live for long periods of time, so I’m hoping I’ll have a chance to start playing shows in the next few months. NI Absynth 4 never ceases to amaze me, and I have been taking my minidisc recorder with me on hikes on Mt. Shasta regularly. The stillness in the air at 7,000 feet above sea level is amazing, and I enjoy sitting quietly and just listening.

Since today is the Summer Solstice, I made several recordings to capture the solar energy. Here is one:

I have been meaning to make a new meditation session for my truesoundhealing.com website for a long time, and finally got around to it this past week. This recording is based on a binaural beat session I have been using to help sleep every night for the past year or so. It is a combination of three layers of binaural beats which gradually change over time, stimulating alpha and theta waves, which can help induce a very deep relaxed meditation and/or sleep. I have added two layers of Absynth tones, and a field recording of soft rain recorded in Japan back in 2001. The session is meant to be played at low volume, probably around 10% or even less for sleep, and can be played on repeat. For casual listening (or massage?) and to appreciate the full frequency effects it can be played louder. Give it a try, binaural beats really work!

A very busy time, with a lot of excitement. Lots of new music, some new equipment. The big news is that a very cool label picked up my album and will be releasing it on CD later this year! I’m hoping to do some sort of tour once its out, and it will be great to share my music with a wider audience.

Besides the ambient pulse music I’ve been focusing on since last Summer, I have also been working on some new material in the style of mid-late ’90s IDM ala Boards of Canada or Aphex Twin. I decided to have a go at videogame music, as I always enjoyed the mid-90’s Squaresoft RPG’s like Secret of Mana, Chrono Trigger and Final Fantasy 3, and their lush soundtracks by Nobuo Uematsu, Yasunori Mitsuda and others. I used four synth channels and a rhythm track, and I think it has a very SNES-like sound to it.

Here is some videogame music… maybe it could be “Theme for the Water Shrine”:

And here is an IDM-style synth sketch:
Jahtari netlabel
Blind Melon – s/t
The Dead Milkmen (joejacktalcum.com bootleg of the month!)

Lots of other stuff too, and maybe a few too embarassing to mention here…
I’ve got a Sirius radio unit but 99% of the time I’m using it to listen to Howard Stern…
Let the music hit you, you won’t feel no pain…

I’ve been working on a lot of music in the past month and a half, making a couple new tracks every week. I’ve been experimenting with some new composition methods and having a lot of fun exploring Absynth 4. I’ve got nearly an hours worth of finished material, and I’m thinking I will start sending some promos to labels again soon. Maybe a live set soon, as well, since a new gallery space opened nearby and it sounds like they are hosting performances.

This is a track that I am calling an “out take” or sketch from my recent sessions, since the mix is a little off, it is more rhythmic than most stuff I have been producing lately, and so I’m not planning to include it in my next release. It is made entirely with Buzz, using some Absynth 4 sampled material.
